Lawmaker's Facebook post showing Obama in turban causing controversy

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — A post on a local lawmaker’s Facebook page has caused some controversy.

The post was a picture of several recent presidents, with almost all of them in military uniforms.

President Obama appears in a turban and sash. Obama, who was born in the U.S., wore the clothing while visiting his father's African village.

The caption under it said: “Next time vote for the real American.”

State Rep. John Torbett posted it on his Facebook page.

Eyewitness News talked to some residents of Mount Holly, in Torbett's district, about the post. Obama visited the area just last week.

“It's a little brazen for someone in that position,” Daniel Myers said.

Torbett agreed with him. He returned Eyewitness News’ messages while in Raleigh.

“As a representative, I should have a higher bar set,” he said. “I should be more aware of what is associated to my name.”

He said he posted it to get public input. He quickly removed the post.

“Do you regret posting that?” Eyewitness News asked.

“I don't know if regret is the right sense,” Torbett said.

He later said he did regret the posting and thanked his critics. Some said the post was racially offensive.

“(I) pretty much thank them for raising my awareness,” he said.

Gaston County resident and radio talk show host James Hall said the damage is done.

“It really puts us back another 30 or 40 years,” Hall said.

He said the posting is divisive.

“The elements of unity and peace need to be put in the forefront,” Hall said.
