ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Rowan County's animal shelter will do away with its gas chamber, and use lethal injection to put down animals.

County commissioners voted on the plan Monday night.

The goal is to use lethal injection in most cases by the end of the month.

A vet will be put on staff at the shelter to assess the needs of the animals, and the shelter will sterilize animals that are adopted to make sure it doesn't get an influx of more unwanted pets.
