HICKORY, N.C. — Many colleges are getting ready to go back to school and one local college has installed body scanners that check students’ temperatures.
No one is allowed on campus if they have a fever -- that’s the goal of the scanners at Catawba Valley Community College.

The college has thousands of students each semester, so they’ve set up 15 thermal scanning screening locations across campus.
If your temperature is normal, you’re given a wrist band and can proceed to your class. Wrist band colors change everyday.
The college said anyone with a temperature reading above 100 degrees will be escorted to an isolation area and asked to leave campus to seek medical attention.

10 people can be scanned at each location in 30 seconds, according to college officials.
The equipment, which costs $6,000, was purchased through the Cares Act. It also alerts when a person is not wearing a mask.
They believe the equipment will deter someone with COVID-19 or another illness from coming to campus.
