CHARLOTTE — Saturday was a big day for several local high school graduates.

Three students received a “grandparent scholarship” from the OEL Legacy Foundation, a scholarship for graduates who were raised by their grandparents.

This year’s recipients told Channel 9 how grateful they are for their grandparents, who helped them get to where they are now.

“To my grandmother: All this is for you. She is my biggest supporter,” graduate Nyleah Powell said. “She loves taking in grandkids. She has like 12 of them; she is my role model and I want to say thank you to her.”

Another recipient also showed their appreciation.

“I mean, I love her man she raised me right,” they said. “That’s all I can say. I have no words.”

All of Saturday’s recipients are going to colleges in North Carolina.
