Lowe's agrees to ban potentially hazardous paint removers from stores

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Bowing to pressure from conservation and environmental groups, Mooresville-based Lowe’s Cos. Inc. announced Tuesday it’s banning paint removers containing a couple of hazardous chemicals by the end of the year.

The National Resources Defense Council and others collected 200,000 signatures from consumers asking Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walmart and other retailers to stop selling paint stripping solutions containing methylene chloride and a toxic solvent called NMP.

Mike McDermott, Lowe’s chief customer officer, says the removal of the paint strippers is a part of its commitment to bring customers “safer, affordable options.”
