CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A student at Central Piedmont Community College was arrested Tuesday. He is accused of having a gun while on campus for class.

Tyler Billings, 18, was on campus Tuesday when one of the college's contracted police officers discovered a handgun "bulging under the student's clothing," a CPCC spokesman said.

"It's just dumb to bring a weapon to school," Pressly Snyder, a CPCC student said. "I don't know what you're thinking doing that."

The officer started talking with the student and noticed the student "appeared uncomfortable and somewhat suspicious," an email from CPCC stated.

CPCC said that after seeing the handgun, the officer "forcefully subdued the student" before confiscating the gun and arresting Billings.

Students were surprised Thursday to learn about the incident.

Even though no other students were involved and no one was seriously injured, some wished the school had informed students about the incident.

"... because we can be more alert to how we're doing things while we're on campus. Most students spend the whole day, five days a week on campus," Gaethane Louis, a CPCC student said.

On an average day, the college has about a dozen security personnel on the central campus, a CPCC spokesman said.

Grayson Glasser, a student, said she notices the presence and that it makes her feel safe.

"If they detected suspicious behavior and picked out that he had a weapon, I think they're on top of their game, absolutely," Glasser said.

In addition to breaking state law, CPCC says Billings violated the college's code of conduct.

The school will review the incident further before deciding whether he will be allowed back.

The college is checking whether Billings had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Even then, having the gun on campus would still be breaking the law.
