CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Police made an arrest in a convenience store robbery in Catawba County where shots were fired.
Police said Dimitris Williams robbed the Wilco Hess early Sunday morning at gunpoint and then fired shots at a newspaper carrier.
The carrier was not hurt.
Police said they got their big break in the case when the getaway driver came forward after seeing the surveillance video of the robbery on the news.
Williams said repeatedly he had nothing to do with the robbery.
However, police believe the man who robbed the store in this surveillance video is Williams.
Investigators said as the robber left the store he fired four shots at Frankie Roseman who delivers papers for the Hickory Daily Record.
Roseman showed Channel 9 earlier this week where one of the bullets hit his car. He also said how he went to get his cell phone to call for help.
"I was just praying he wasn't hitting me and I hope he didn't hit the girl inside," Roseman said.
"One of the persons involved saw the coverage on the news media and decided to talk with us," said Capt. Tim Hayes with Newton Police.
Police say the getaway driver was the one who came forward the same day Eyewitness News aired the story. Police say there could be more arrests. It is a crime Williams maintains he knows nothing about.
Channel 9 checked the jail website and Williams remains locked up. He is scheduled to go in front of a judge Thursday morning.
