CHINA GROVE, N.C. — A man was charged with child abuse after police found an 11-year-old driving a Hummer, according to a police report.
China Grove police said a black Hummer was spotted on Flat Rock Road stopped in the roadway. When a police officer tried to approach the stopped vehicle, the Hummer took off. The officer followed the Hummer, which did not stop for the patrol car, until it darted off the roadway near 1763 Flat Rock Road.
An officer said a young driver jumped from the Hummer and tried to run. The officer identified the driver as an 11-year-old.
Delphin Sherrill was charged with misdemeanor child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and allowing an unauthorized person to operate a vehicle.
Sherrill was placed under a $25,000 bond and placed in Rowan County jail.
