GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Officials said a man claiming to be with the Gaston County Police Department tried to scam a resident over the phone Monday morning.

The resident said the caller sounded official and told him he was in contempt of court for failing to appear for jury duty.

Authorities said this is not the correct legal process to serve a failure to appeal; this is a scam.

The caller also threatened to send police to the resident’s home to arrest him if he did not agree to pay his fines over the phone, according to officials.

Gaston County police wanted to remind residents their department does not take or demand payment over the phone.
