Man dies in head-on crash in Catawba County, troopers say

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — One man was killed and another was seriously injured in a head-on crash in Catawba County on Saturday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, troopers said a 2005 Suzuki SUV crossed over the centerline on Mount Pleasant Road near Little Mountain Road and crashed into a 2006 Nissan Altima heading the opposite direction.

Kevin Lee Johnson, 67, of Sherrills Ford, was driving the Nissan when the crash occurred. He died at the scene from his injuries. Troopers said he was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Suzuki suffered serious injuries and was flown to Charlotte for treatment. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Mount Pleasant Road was closed for about three hours as troopers investigated the crash.

Highway patrol said charges are pending as the investigation is ongoing.
