ALBERMARLE, NC — The Albemarle Police Department says a man died early Wednesday morning in a crash that followed a business burglary.
Just before 1 a.m., police said officers spotted an SUV backed up against the Mazatlán Restaurant on Hilco Street and a man wearing a mask coming out through the broken front door.
Officers tried to stop the SUV, but it sped off. The SUV got on NC 740 and headed towards Badin, where it crashed into a tree and burst into flames.
The man’s name has not been released.
Police were able to get the driver out, and tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers, but they couldn’t save the passenger who died in the blaze.
Police say the driver, Shaidae Vontrel Glover of Charlotte, is recovering from her injuries. She faces charges when she’s released.
The SUV was a rental.
