CMPD: Impairment suspected in crash that left man dead, child hospitalized

CHARLOTTE — A man was killed and a juvenile was taken to the hospital after a crash into a neighborhood entrance pillar in southwest Charlotte on Saturday, police said.

Officers were called to the single-car crash just before 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Shopton Road West and Eagle Oak Drive. When they arrived, police found a Dodge van off the side of the road with heavy front-end damage.

The driver, 34-year-old Eddie Guadalupe Jr., died at the scene, according to MEDIC. His juvenile passenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Detectives said the van ran off the left side of the road and hit a neighborhood entrance stone pillar. The front-seat passenger was not in a booster seat, officers said, and is at Atrium Health Main in stable condition.

Officers said impairment is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
