Man driving motorcycle dies after hitting Jeep at red light, Gastonia police say

GASTONIA, N.C. — A man riding a motorcycle was killed in crash in Gastonia over the weekend, police said.

On Sunday, Gastonia Police Department officers went to North New Hope Road at East Franklin Boulevard. It was there that they found Darrien Cooper, who had been driving a motorcycle.

Police said Cooper hit the back of a Jeep Wrangler. He was taken from the scene to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators determined that Cooper had been driving south on North New Hope Road when the Jeep was stopped at a red light. The Jeep’s driver had just started moving forward when Cooper hit the back of her car, police said.

The crash in still under investigation. Police asked anyone who may have witnessed it to call Ofcr. C. Blair at 704-866-6702.

No further information was released.
