CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man charged with killing a driver in a crash on Brookshire Boulevard last week faced a judge for the first time Monday.
Search warrants unveiled new details about what Steven Johnson was doing before his arrest.
According to the three different warrants filed, police said Johnson admitted to using cocaine in the days before the accident and officers said they found baggies of the drug in his car after the crash.
Police said Johnson was high on drugs when he smashed into the back of an SUV driven by Les Dahm last Wednesday.
Officers said Johnson hit Dahm on Brookshire Boulevard near Interstate 85, killing him, and then injured two other drivers as his car spun out of control.
On Monday, Johnson, on crutches and with an injured foot, appeared before a judge on involuntary manslaughter charges.
Despite Johnson's arrest on drug paraphernalia charges less than 24 hours before the accident Johnson's attorney spoke to Eyewitness News and asked the public to keep an open mind.
"Right now all we can do is express our heartfelt condolences to everyone involved in the case. It's still very early in the process, we don't have any discovery yet, we don't know how things are going to come out in court," said attorney William Cathcart.
Johnson remains behind bars on a $310,000 bond.
His next court date is March 6.
