Man pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter in stepson's drowning

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A Newton man serving prison time in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections for robbery with a dangerous weapon in Burke County pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with the drowning death of his stepson during Catawba County Superior Court.

The 26-year-old Dustin Wayne Sanders was sentenced to serve 19 to 32 months concurrently with a sentence of four to six years he already is serving for the Burke County robbery that took place at Walmart in Morganton in March 2014.

Sanders’ wife, 31-year-old Kelli Elizabeth Ledford, also of Newton, is facing involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse charges related to the May 24, 2014, drowning death of her 4-year-old son at Lake Lookout.

Her case is scheduled for trial in Catawba County on May 18. Ledford also was given 12 to 24 months of active prison time earlier this month after pleading guilty to accessory after the fact to the robbery at Walmart in Burke County.
