GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities tracked down a convicted rapist in Gaston County who spent nearly a week on the lam, and his girlfriend is accused of helping him hide.

Gary Simmons left court on Nov. 16 during juror deliberations, saying he needed a cigarette break.

His brand of cigarettes is what led investigators to an attic where he was hiding, authorities said.

His girlfriend, Robin Lackey, who is accused of helping the convicted rapist get away, accepted a $1 million bond without argument.

She told the judge she moved to Belmont from Davidson County to be with Simmons and tried to explain why she let the convicted rapist hide in her home.

"I know Gary had run," Lackey said.

Lackey went to court with Simmons for his trial on Nov. 16, when he fled.

Jurors convicted Simmons of raping a 14-year-old girl, even though he wasn't in court to hear the verdict.

Sheriff's officers searched Lackey's home early in the investigation, but Simmons wasn't there.

They kept watching Lackey and noticed that her grocery shopping included Simmons' brand of cigarettes and beer.

They returned Saturday night and discovered Simmons in the attic with a sleeping bag, beer, food and cigarettes.

"I'm not even allowing my children (out) without somebody with them," said Lanny Pruett, who lives across the street. "The person hiding out that guy-- I think they are just as guilty because no one should protect anyone that molests a child."

Simmons will likely return to court next week to be sentenced for the rape of the teenage girl. He faces up to 52 years in prison.
