LANCASTER, S.C. — Authorities in Lancaster involved in a standoff on Thursday used tear gas inside a mobile home and apprehended the suspect, identified as Michael Wayne Terry II, who was hiding beneath the home, officials said.
Lancaster County deputies said they tried to pull over a man in Jeep Cherokee because his tag was invalid.
A deputy followed the Jeep and pulled behind it after it turned into Terry's driveway on Ruth Street. Authorities said Terry got out of the Jeep and immediately began arguing with the deputy about the stop.
Terry began walking away from the deputy and put his hands into his pockets, officials said. They said the deputy reached for Terry to detain him, and Terry ran away.
The deputy chased Terry around some nearby homes until they ended back at Terry's residence and Terry entered the home, officials said.

Investigators said Terry came back out of his home, got a hunting rifle out of the Jeep and went back into the mobile home.
SWAT responded to the scene to negotiate with the man as family members encouraged him to leave the home for a peaceful resolution. The SWAT team spent several hours attempting to get Terry to exit his home, offiicals said.
Authorities deployed tear gas, but said Terry escaped through a trap door and was found under the home.
“Although this incident stretched on for several hours, we are happy it ended peacefully and without injury to Mr. Terry, any citizen, or any of our officers," Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said. "The streets in this neighborhood are narrow, and the homes are close to each other. We appreciate the cooperation of nearby residents and are sorry for their inconvenience.”
Terry was taken to the hospital because he was suicidal, officials said.
Terry was served with warrants charging him with resisting arrest and pointing and presenting a firearm. He was also given a ticket for improper tag.
No injuries were reported.
