Marion police say stabbing was self-defense

MARION, N.C. — Police say a stabbing at the Sportsman Inn Monday was self-defense. The stabber wasn’t arrested, but the man who got cut was.

James Harold Hall, 25, of South Catawba Avenue in Old Fort was arrested following a traffic stop Tuesday and charged with driving while license revoked, breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods. He was taken into custody in lieu of a $3,000 bond.

Detective Angie Fineberg of the Marion Police Department said Hall went to Room 22 of the motel around 6:30 p.m. Monday, looking for his girlfriend, who was reportedly in the room occupied by 47-year-old Paul Wesley Thompson.

Fineberg stated that Hall kicked in the door and was met by Thompson, who was brandishing a kitchen steak knife. Thompson stabbed Hall twice in the left arm and the right side, but the injuries were not life-threatening, according to the detective.

No charges were filed against Thompson.

Officers located Hall Tuesday. Fineberg said he was driving on a revoked license and had in his possession property that belonged to Thompson and the woman.
