CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) is celebrating its 35th anniversary and is currently recruiting businesses to host students for its summer 2021 program.

Since 1986, the MYEP has helped prepare local youth for future employment by providing meaningful, career-oriented internships for participants.

At a recent news conference, Mayor Vi Lyles said more than 600 students have applied to participate but the pandemic and remote work has made business recruiting for the program challenging.

“It provides the opportunity for upward mobility, and our young people need and deserve this opportunity,” Mayor Lyles said.

Former participant Kaleb Montez took part in the program and said it helped him reach his goal of becoming an engineer.

“I learned many things from this program like networking, 3D modeling and designing, and analyzing data to find an optimal solution,” he said.

Students in the program must work a minimum of 100 hours, which can be done in person, hybrid or virtual, and they must be paid $9 per hour.

The deadline for businesses to apply to host students this summer is March 15.
