Mecklenburg County signs off on incentives for ACC HQ move to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners this week approved the final portion of incentives for the Atlantic Coast Conference’s relocation to Charlotte from uptown this summer.

Commissioners approved $40,282 over a three-year period in a unanimous vote. In November, Charlotte City Council backed a similar three-year grant worth $40,914. The ACC also will receive $15 million from state government for keeping its headquarters in North Carolina, contingent upon awarding men’s and women’s basketball tournaments and some other neutral-site championships to N.C. cities over the next decade.

The conference started in 1953 and it has had its headquarters in Greensboro from the beginning. In 2021, under new Commissioner Jim Phillips and with approval from the conference board, the ACC launched what became a 13-month site selection campaign. It ended in September 2022 with the conference choosing Charlotte over fellow finalists Greensboro and Orlando, Florida, for the headquarters.

Prior to the county board’s vote on Wednesday, a presentation by the economic development department noted that the ACC will bring a 50-person staff to Charlotte as part of the move, with annual average salaries of $95,000.
