'Challenging rescue' on hiking trail near Whitewater Center, Medic says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was seriously injured on a hiking trail near the Whitewater Center, officials with the Whitewater Center told Channel 9.

A manager with the Whitewater Center said the person was hurt while walking on a section of the Carolina Thread Trail, which is not part of the facility.

Medic said the person was in a hard-to-reach area and it was a challenging rescue. The Whitewater Center official said the person was evacuated from the nearby Whitewater Academy.

The West Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Department, Cooks Volunteer Fire Department and the Charlotte Fire Department were called in to help with the rescue. MedCenter Air transported the person to Carolinas Medical Center.

The person's injuries are described as serious.
