Millennial mecca: Charlotte area gets high marks for young professionals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new study by SmartAsset shows Charlotte continuing to remain a hot spot for millennials based on net migration trends.

The personal finance company, using the most recent U.S. Census Bureau data from 2018, ranked Charlotte at No. 5 on its list of cities where millennials are moving. The Queen City had 13,236 millennials move in from another state and 9,428 leave, resulting in net migration of 3,808.

That number, however, was the lowest net migration of millennials Charlotte had recorded since SmartAsset started the study in 2017. In years past, Charlotte’s net migration ranged from 4,927 to 10,707 millennials. Charlotte ranked as the top overall city for millennial migration in SmartAsset’s inaugural study, based on 2015 Census data.

SmartAsset compiled the ranking by examining the number of people ages 25 to 39 who moved into a state or city, compared to the number of people leaving those same areas. It analyzed 205 of the largest U.S. cities for which data was available.

For millennials moving to Charlotte, whether they end up renting or buying, Niche.com has put together its annual list of the best places for young professionals in the Queen City.
