Missing woman, 88, inspires Polkton police chief who found her

POLKTON, N.C. — Polkton police Chief Matthew Norris said an 88-year-old woman he helped Wednesday reminded him why he became a police officer.

When Norris responded to a house fire, someone told him about a woman that drove up to the house who might be lost.

Norris discovered that the woman was missing from Georgia, so he took her back to the police department where she was check out by emergency medical services.

Mrs. Allen was deemed healthy although her family said she may be in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, Norris said.

Norris said even though she couldn’t remember basic details about her life like where she was or where she slept Tuesday night, she could recite scripture from memory and chatted with him about God for three hours.

“She repeatedly told me that I was her blessing today, but I just want to say that she was the greatest blessing that I could've received,” Norris said.

Norris said she reminded him to “always show love and grace” to others.

“Mrs. Allen may never recover from the things that are happening to her mind, but she will always have God in her heart and mind," Norris said.

Norris said his unexpected new friend reminded him to appreciate his unique job.

“I get to help people every day, and I get to be the person that shows them a light in the dark tunnel that is their life,” Norris said.

Norris said he will never forget the woman from Georgia.

“There are days that law enforcement officers have that will change their lives forever, either through tragedy or through the outpouring of love. Today was one of those for me personally,” Norris said.
