Monroe K-9 officer unexpectedly dies of unknown medical emergency

MONORE, N.C. — The city of Monroe is mourning the sudden loss of one of its K-9 officers.

The Monroe Police Department announced that “Kilo” passed away unexpectedly on Thursday. Officers said that Kilo was experiencing medical problems at home before he was taken to the vet.

He later died of an unknown medical emergency. Kilo was nearly two years old at the time of his death.

“We’re saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of a member of the Monroe Police Department. Please remember K9 Officer Burton, his family, the Monroe Police Department, and the other K9 Officers in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the loss of a family member,” said Police Chief Bryan Gilliard.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, according to police.
