MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The neon “open” sign at Richard’s Coffee Shop is lit up again after being dark for more than a year.

The Mooresville coffee shop also serves as a living military museum and gives veterans a place to gather.

>> Channel 9 reporter Elsa Gillis talked to VanWormer and other veterans who were at Richard’s. Watch the video at the top of this page to learn more about how this spot is more than a coffee shop.

Veteran Sandi VanWormer was at the shop on Thursday for the reopening.

“There were multiple times today where my eyes just started watering up and it was so emotional, because for a lot of veterans, especially older veterans, this is their social outlet, and they had 13 months where they were missing their friends,” she said.
