Moped driver killed in crash on Caldwell County highway, troopers say

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man driving a moped was killed in a crash on a Caldwell County highway Wednesday night, troopers say.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers were called at 10:45 p.m. to Highway 321 near the intersection of Alex Lee Boulevard.

Troopers said a 2020 Tao moped, a 2003 Nissan Altima, and a 2015 Hyundai Elantra were driving north on Highway 321 in the right lane. That was when they said the Nissan collided with the moped, causing it to flip and throw its driver onto the road. The Hyundai then hit the driver of the moped, who was identified as Ralph Preston Wolfe Jr., 53, of Hickory.

Wolfe died at the scene, investigators said.

The drivers of the Nissan and the Hyundai were not hurt, troopers said.

Authorities said as the investigation continues, troopers will consult the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office about charges.
