RALEIGH, N.C. — NASCAR legend Richard Petty is among this year’s recipients of the North Carolina Awards, the state’s highest civilian honor.
Gov. Josh Stein announced the honorees, recognizing North Carolinians for contributions in areas including public service, science and the arts.

Petty, known as “The King,” is the most decorated driver in NASCAR history. Beyond racing, he has a long history of supporting veterans and children battling serious illnesses.
Petty and the other honorees will receive their awards during a ceremony at the Lenovo Center in November.
