GREENSBORO, N.C. — A North Carolina airport has changed its name after 30 years.
The News & Record of Greensboro reports officials announced that Piedmont Triad International Airport will change its name to Central North Carolina International Airport, effective Jan. 1.
Airport officials spent time talking to political, business and civic leaders about a new name that had to emphasize "Carolina" and "international."
After being known as PTI, the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority decided after months of discussion to make a change that would describe where the airport appears on the map.
Steve Showfety, authority chairman, said the new name "clearly defines where we're located and it addresses our single strongest asset," which he said was the airport's location in North Carolina and on the East Coast.
