NORTH CAROLINA — Economic developers with a longtime goal of luring an automaker to North Carolina, took to the skies this week to get a message across — literally — after the founder of Tesla Inc. threatened to relocate its manufacturing plant in Fremont, California.

At around 12:15 p.m. Pacific time on Tuesday, a direct appeal to Elon Musk appeared in the sky above the electric car factory as part of an effort to promote the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite.
Last week, Musk reopened the plant in defiance to the governor’s executive order.
The banner, pulled by an airplane, read: “TESLA COME TO NC. WE WANT YOU @GRMEGASITE”.

The recruiting effort to the 1,825-acre megasite in Randolph County, which runs along the Guilford County border, came in response to Musk’s threat to move the Tesla plant out of California, largely because of his dissatisfaction with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s continued shutdown of the state.
