NORTH CAROLINA — North Carolina teachers are still among the worst paid in the nation, according to a report released Friday.

The National Education Association ranked the state 41st in teacher pay, up one spot from last year.

But the nearly $48,000 average is still $10,000 less than the national average.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has proposed an average 5 percent raise for teachers this year.

The state superintendent asked lawmakers for a 10 percent raise in January.

She doesn't expect they'll get it, but said teachers will likely get a substantial raise because it's an election year.

Lawmakers unveil their budget proposals next week. They haven't said how much teachers could get.
