CHARLOTTE — A North Carolina teen is seriously sick after being infected by a brain-eating amoeba in warm freshwater, officials said Thursday.
State health officials say the infection was caused by Naegleria fowleri, a microscopic organism that can damage the brain.
Officials didn’t say where the teen contracted the illness, but it generally poses danger for anyone who swims in warm lakes, rivers or ponds.
While the infection is extremely rare, it serves as a reminder that the amoeba is found in our area.
Officials say it’s important to prevent water going up your nose in freshwater, especially during times of high water temperatures. Avoid putting your head underwater in hot springs and thermal waters, and don’t dig or stir up sediment.
