MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to resurface more than 16 miles of primary and secondary roads in Mecklenburg County.
The $3.8 million contract was awarded to Blythe Brothers Asphalt Co. LLC of Charlotte.
Work can begin as early as July 1 and is scheduled to be completed by June 20, 2014.
The contract includes resurfacing a four-mile section of N.C. 73 from the Catawba River bridge to Catawba Avenue, in addition to nine sections of secondary roads. The contractor will mill existing pavement, reconstruct shoulders and resurface the roadway.
This is one of 20 contracts totaling $165.1 million awarded by NCDOT this week for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 13.5 percent, or $25.8 million, below NCDOT estimates.
