CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Safety improvements to the Brookshire Freeway will start next week.

North Carolina Department of Transportation is putting in two warning signals for drivers who are attempting to merge on to Interstate 77 North.

When traffic starts backing up, a warning light will go on near Graham Street telling drivers to slow down.

"You get jammed because people are trying to get on the 77 on-ramp," one driver said, "and you're trying to get off on the Brookshire and it's a mess. It's a civil engineering nightmare."

If it gets worse, it will activate another light near Tryon Street.

Construction will go through early December.

Crews will work at night.
