MOORESVILLE, NC — Nearly 800 American flags are flying in a Mooresville field on Memorial Day to honor those who died in service to our country.

Each flag was purchased by someone in memory of a military member.
Around 100 volunteers started placing the flags at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
Memorial Day is described by President Ronald Reagan as a day we put aside to remember fallen heroes and to pray that no heroes will have to die for us again.
Mooresville was hit by tragedy earlier this month after Officer Jordan Sheldon was shot and killed in the line of duty. The event kicked off with a dedication for Sheldon, who received a special blue flag in his honor.
The event concluded with a ceremony at 10 a.m. where all of the names who the flags are representing were read aloud.
The money from the flags purchased by family members not only pays for each American-made flag, but proceeds go to community services, youth services and child abuse prevention.
