CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A massive hole in the middle of Lexington Avenue in Dilworth is so large construction equipment can fit inside, but neighbors have expressed concern after periodic water outages and loud overnight work.
Charlotte Water said the construction is part of a storm drainage improvement project.
Officials said the end goal is to reduce street and structure flooding by replacing old underground water pipes.
Those who live nearby said the construction has caused some water leaks that have weakened the road's surface leading to at least two recent sinkholes.
Neighbors said as part of that work a lot of drilling and hammering takes place around the clock, making it difficult to sleep at night.
Neighbors spoke with Channel 9's Briana Harper about how they are forced to adjust to new road closures and periodic water outages.
"Showering at the Y is never fun because the water goes out and you gotta go to work, you gotta use the bathroom and you can't use the water in your house and that's pretty frustrating," neighbor Joe Lanser said.
Charlotte Water said they are providing bottle water for those who are affected by the construction.
The contract for the construction is for three years, but the specific phase of the project along Lexington Avenue is expected to last at least six months.
