Independent contractors, self-employed can now apply for unemployment benefits

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Millions of people have applied for unemployment benefits, but self-employed workers and independent contractors haven’t because they’re not eligible for regular state unemployment benefits.

But that all changes Friday when those who are self-employed can apply for the program.

“I gave all my pet sitters that work for me, I gave them a lump sum I got out of my savings just to give to them," said Holly Newton, who has a pet sitting company.
