New high-rise coming soon to Charlotte skyline

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There are changes coming to the Charlotte skyline.

On Friday, developers broke ground at 615 South College next to the Westin Hotel in Uptown.

The new $122 million office building will be 19 stories high with views overlooking downtown.

North Carolina Governor Pat McCory was also there to celebrate the ground breaking. This project has been in the works since the Westin Hotel started construction and since the governor was Charlotte's mayor.

The project is just one part of a greater goal to build up the area around the Stonewall Light Rail station, next to the high-rise.

"The Stonewall Station connects to a rooftop Whole Foods beer and wine garden," said Travis Garland with the Portman Holdings development group. "It brings together Uptown and Southend a little more."

There will also be new shops and restaurants. The idea is creating some buzz in uptown.

Officials say the new office space will also bring more jobs.

"There is this unbelievable correlation between job growth and new office space," Michael Smith of Charlotte Center City Partners said. "It's almost one to one."

Charlotte resident Fabian Herrera is looking forward to seeing what the Stonewall station area will look like. He moved to Charlotte from Ecuador five years ago and has seen the growth in Charlotte first hand.

"It's great for this area," Herrera said. "It's bringing a lot of jobs with construction. It has really developed the city."

615 South College will be ready for move in by February 2017.
