BELMONT, N.C. — A dog was impaled while trying to hop a wrought iron fence Saturday afternoon near Belmont, according to Channel 9's partners at the Gaston Gazette.
The dog's owners held him up while they waited for firefighters to arrive at their home on South New Hope Road.
The dog had jumped up on a bench near the six-foot fence before his leap. The fence post impaled the dog through his left hip close to his tail.
New Hope firefighters didn't want to remove the fence post from the dog for fear of hurting him further, so they used a battery-operated tool to saw away a section of the fence.
Assistant Fire Chief David Brumbaugh said the dog stayed calm while the firefighters tried to free him.
While they worked, a firefighter called an emergency veterinarian clinic to prepare them for the dog's arrival.
The crew was able to free the dog and his owners brought him to the clinic.
Brumbaugh said the dog seemed to be in good spirits, but has not heard back yet from its owners.
