New Mecklenburg Co. DSS director starts job

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The new director of the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services started her job Monday.

Peggy Eagan is the department's first leader in months, and she takes over following a lot of turmoil in DSS.

Eagan has said one of the first things she will focus on is building working relationships. She told Eyewitness News that she believes in efficiency, transparency and accountability.

The interim county manager said that's important as the county works to rebuild some strained relationships after the last DSS director and county manager were fired.

Eagan said one of her biggest challenges will be the size of her department. It has a $160 million budget and 1,200 employees. That's bigger than anything she's had experience with.

Eagan is a certified social worker and has been with the Children and Family Services Center most recently.

Many of the same people served there are also served by DSS.
