New website allows CMS parents to weigh in on student assignment

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Parents who are concerned about Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ student assignment plan now have the chance to weigh in on it.

The district has launched a website giving parents a direct avenue for feedback.

Parents have had a lot of questions about how the new student assignment plan will impact their children. On the CMS Listens website, they can search their child's school to learn about the changes, and can also leave their feedback.

Phase 1 went into effect this year, focusing on transportation zones, diversity and increasing magnet seats.

Student assignment happens every six years, and the goal is to break up pockets of poverty and improve failing schools.

In the fall of 2018, Phase 2 will begin. It impacts 75 schools, shifting boundary lines for 14 high schools, pairing up certain elementary schools and breaking up some K-8 schools.

In fall 2019, Dilworth, Eastover, Pinewood and Montclair elementary schools are the last schools to transition.
