HICKORY, N.C. — Dozens of people gathered in downtown Hickory Friday morning to remember the lives lost on Sept. 11.
Firefighters rang a bell as leaders read the names of the three planes.
Ladder trucks from Hickory and Newton hoisted a huge American flag at Union Square.
Rich Waterbury was a firefighter in Westchester County, N.Y., and helped dig for 28 hours straight in the days after the twin towers fell.
“It brings back a lot of horrible memories and bad feelings about what happened, but it also reminds me of how people come together and are there for each other,” Waterbury said.
The town of Long View also brought one of its trucks that they got after 9/11. That truck responded to Ground Zero 25 years ago.
