MEDIC said they were on the scene as a precaution but that nobody was hurt.
According to officials with Piedmont Natural Gas, a third-party damaged the gas line, creating the leak.
Officials said the leak was still active at 5 a.m. but that there was no threat to the public and that no evacuations were needed.
Crews were working to isolate the leak, but authorities expected the road to remain closed throughout the day.
East 7th Street was reopened by Friday night.
