Number of calories, carbs could be printed on beer labels

The number of calories and carbs in beer could soon be printed right on the label.

Major U.S. breweries announced they will voluntarily disclose the number of calories, carbs and portion size on labels, packaging and websites.

The Beer Institute, a trade group, is also encouraging beer makers to show when a beer was brewed.

Some brands already add nutrition facts to bottles.

Consumer advocates have long pushed for nutrition facts -- saying alcohol can be a major source of calories. A light beer has about 100 calories and a regular beer has about 150.

Brewers have set a self-imposed deadline for the added information to show up on bottles by 2020.

Craft brewers are not part of the plan to add new information to labels.

They say it's a challenge because products change so frequently.
