LINCOLNTON, N.C. — More than 20 people were taken to the hospital after a leak at a business, according to emergency management officials.
People in the office at RW Garcia, a tortilla chip plant, first reported the illnesses after a gas leak. Officials found as many as 27 cases throughout the plant.
Firefighters worked to cut off the gas to the building after finding elevated levels of carbon monoxide at 3181 Progress Drive.
"Several employees started developing headaches and nausea and some reddening of the skin and I think one lady actually passed out in the office," said Bill Summers with Lincoln County Emergency Management.
One firefighter was also taken to the hospital.
