CMPD make arrest in east Charlotte shooting death

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a man in connection with a murder in east Charlotte Wednesday night.

Homicide detectives have charged 34-year-old Jacob Hill with murder after they said a double shooting left one man dead and another man with life-threatening injuries.

Police were called to the 3200 block of Shamrock Drive late Wednesday afternoon where paramedics found Darrell Hames, 26, who had been fatally shot in the parking lot of the Windsor Harbor Apartments.

"These killings need to stop," said Tiarra Johnson, who drove to the apartment complex after learning her friend had been shot and killed. "Now his children have to grow up without a father."

Channel 9 talked with loved ones and neighbors who were all desperate for answers as police canvassed three scenes that were all believed to be connected to Hames' death.

Chopper 9 flew overhead as police were first called to the apartment complex. Investigators set up a large perimeter around the man who was found shot to death near a car and just yards away from a playground.

Minutes after the initial call, police were dispatched to Michigan Avenue, which is a half-mile from the apartment complex. Investigators found another man with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A possible break in the case came minutes after the second man was found with a gunshot wound. Police were dispatched to North Tryon Street and Sugarcreek Road after a black Cadillac Escalade that witnesses described leaving the scene of the shooting was involved in a crash.

Investigators said a man in the SUV was taken into custody. Sources also told Channel 9 investigators found blood in the SUV.

"It's all just so unfortunate," said a woman who recently moved into the apartment complex.

Investigators believe the incident was drug related.

Hill was charged with murder, attempted robbery, trafficking of cocaine, second-degree kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an altered or obliterated serial number.
