DAVIDSON, N.C. — An employee with Davidson College was burned when a steam line in a basement burst, college officials said. It happened around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
A Davidson physical plant employee was repairing the steam water heater in Watts residence hall, officials said. He and a colleague made the repair, and upon re-energizing the water heater, the tank released hot water from a pressure relief valve.
The employee suffered skin burns from the hot water. He was conscious and coherent throughout the incident.
The employee was flown to the Baptist Burn Center, in Winston-Salem.
Another employee working with him was able to pull him away from the steam.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators will examine the site. The Watts repair is complete and systems are back in service, college officials said.
