CABARRUS CO. — Cabarrus County School leaders said growth could force them to draw near district lines, and that has parents worried about which schools their children will attend.
Proposed changes could impact students at Cox Mill Elementary, W.R. Odell Elementary and Charles E. Boger Elementary.
According to Board of Education chair Barry Shoemaker, district leaders are trying to fix enrollment for growth in the northwest and southwest portions of the county.
This could be a disappointment, especially for parents who live in the Cox Mill area. John Reed said buying a house includes doing thorough research on the school district that his four kids would attend.
Taking away a school that you've really chosen where you live to attend that school, I would not be happy about it," said Reed.
The proposed lines also take into account the opening of the new Odell Elementary School for third through fifth grade, which opens in August 2016. It also takes into account new housing that will bring in more students. Alicia Baker said her daughter thrived at Cox Mill, so she understands the possible let-down that could be coming.
"Awesome teachers. Awesome atmosphere. I just couldn't imagine having to leave that school and go elsewhere," Baker explained.
Shoemaker said in a statement: "We strive to place the students first and will do everything possible to assure a positive transition and a powerful learning experience."
According to the district spokesperson, no changes will be made to affect the next school year.
