CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — He wasn't gone long.
Less than two days after police say he cut off his electronic monitor, officers arrested Tomonta Simmons at a home in southwest Charlotte Friday morning.
“Luckily, we got a lot of information from the public about Tomonta," said Sgt. Dave Scheppegrel, who supervises CMPD's electronic monitoring program.
Police said it was the second time that Simmons had cut off an electronic monitor in less than a year, but Mecklenburg County's Chief District Court Judge said she still believes that the program works.
"Having the monitor is an added level of security. It's not a guarantee. There's really, you can't take the human behavior factor out of some of this," said Judge Lisa Bell.
Bell said that 98 percent of the defendants on the program do not cut off their monitors. CMPD said five people have cut off their monitors so far this year, including Simmons, out of 375 wearing them.
Simmons probably won't have a chance to cut his monitor off a third time. He was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail Friday and his bond was set at $905,000.
