CHARLOTTE — A man is dead and two others were hurt following a shooting in northeast Charlotte Saturday night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

CMPD said it responded around 11:40 p.m. to the 800 block of Woodside Avenue, near North Davidson Street in the Villa Heights neighborhood, for reports of a shooting into an occupied dwelling. At the time, officers said they found multiple shell casings on the road.

A short time later, police said three gunshot victims arrived at a local hospital and CMPD was called to investigate. Detectives said they determined the three has all been hurt during the shooting on Woodside Avenue.

The victims did not live at the home that was shot into, police said.

Two of the people were expected to recover from their injuries, but 23-year-old Elante’ Nasir Thompson died at the hospital, according to officers.

Some neighbors said they heard more than 10 shots that sounded like cannon fire. They said it was a scary moment for those who live on that street.

“Yeah, it’s very concerning. There are people obviously walking around the street all the time. So hearing something like this. It just kind of broke out as concerning,” resident James Szittai said.

CMPD said the investigation into the case is ongoing.

A second shooting also happened shortly before 11:30 Saturday night.

Officials said they responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call and found 50-year-old Malik Fidel Whitney, who had been shot on North Tryon Street near Craighead Road.

Whitney was transported to Atrium Main where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said they arrested the man responsible for the shooting, Darrell McKinley, 53, and charged him with voluntary manslaughter.
