ROCK HILL, S.C. — Two local parents are out of jail after police said they found their two young children living in disturbing conditions.
Police showed Eyewitness News part of the video they took during the heroin bust at the house on Brer Rabbit Run in Rock Hill Thursday night.
In it, the officer describes what he sees.
“Trash pile beside the residence,” he said.
They said they could not show us video from inside, but said it was far worse.
“I've been doing this many, many years. This was one of the worst. I'm not going to say it was the worst, but it was very close,” said Commander Marvin Brown with the Drug Enforcement Unit.
He said there was decaying food, trash and dirty clothes everywhere. There was also an overpowering smell of dog feces, he said.
“To the point it would make you sick,” Brown said.
Inside, they said they found a 7-year-old and a 1-year-old. The 1-year-old was in a playpen right next to a bed with a loaded handgun under the pillow, officials said.
“There was no decision to be made about taking the children out of the home. We were going to do that,” Brown said.
They charged the parents, Scott Caldwell and Jodie Harris, with unlawful conduct.
The grandparents, Karen Harris and Mark Thompson, were charged with possession of $100 worth of heroin.
The children were given to other family members.
Eyewitness News was told the parents got out of jail on bond Friday morning and police got a tip they returned home with the children.
Eyewitness News went to the home but no one answered the door.
Police contacted Child Services. They plan on giving social workers a copy of the video that shows the conditions inside of the house.
